9/11 memorialOn Sunday, millions will take at least a moment to reflect on the terrorist attacks 10 years earlier on the Pentagon and World Trade Center and how the world has changed since those events. Thousands will be gathered at the 9/11 memorial site – including Presidents Obama and George W. Bush – to commemorate the anniversary and read the names of those that were lost when the towers came down. Fifteen photography agencies and news publications will have their pool photographers there to document the event. Those photos will show up – no doubt – in much of the world’s publications later that day and in the coming days. And Mainstream Data will be there to make it all possible.

Specializing in data transfer is just one of many things that Mainstream Data does well. We do it very well, and it’s something we do far better than most others out there. That’s what the photo agencies found out when they tried to work out the details for covering the 9/11 ceremony.

There will be some 12-15 pool photographers there to cover the event and they’ll each be sending in hundreds of photos. They’ll be sending their photos via FTP from the World Trade Center Memorial to 15 major publications and agencies (the New York Times, Reuters, UPI, AFP, SIPA, EPA and others). When the agencies began approaching others about how to get these photos out as quickly as possible to meet deadlines worldwide, they were hit with a brick wall. One provider told them it would cripple their system to carry that kind of photo load. Another said there was no way they could manage it.

We don’t doubt the capabilities of these other agencies, because it is a rather large event, but when Mainstream was approached about providing the FTP service for the event (for free) it was a simple matter on our end.

So simple that we easily had the system set up and will be able to get the photos out over our MediasFTP service from the memorial site. Our FTP service is easy to use and addictively fast, and we were happy to be in a position where we could help with such an important event.

On a related note, since we also partner with so many of these agencies through Newscom, many of the photos from the ceremony will be available for license and download on Newscom. You can see some of the photos of the terrorist attacks and the aftermath on Newscom here.

On Sunday, our thoughts and prayers will be with the survivors and families of the victims as they commemorate the event that impacted so many of us.
